Paragraph Writing

The students have been inquiring into paragraph writing for a month now to strengthen their skills in writing paragraphs including all the essential elements. They understood that a good paragraph is comprised of  a title, opening statement, supporting details and closure. They maintained a rubric for self to check if they included all the essentials of the paragraph writing. They were also conscious of the spellings and punctuations while writing. They practised writing paragraphs using picture prompts, writing prompts etc. They also got an opportunity to colour the days of the week where they organised their thoughts in a graphic organiser and then wrote a paragraph. They were assessed for their paragraph writing skill through story packets where they chose a story packet with a title and associated words, and used the words to write their own paragraphs.

Formative Assessment Task 1

Kinds Of Government through a MIND MAP

The formative assessment on kinds of government produced a lot of colourful mind maps. It was amazing to see children put down their information in a structured mind map for others to understand.

Prior Knowledge

Children sorted and organised as to who took decisions in their home, school, city/village/town, state, country and world. They also responded on four statements very strongly.
a. The government is not responsible for everyone
b. Everyone’s opinion counts
c. Those who make decisions are the most important
d. It is okay for some people to be rich, they must have worked hard for it
What struck us, as adults, was the fact that the children were able to justify their choice of statement and also question others on their choice.  A lot of politicians in the making…………..

Unit 1: How we organise ourselves

Understanding T.D Theme & Central Idea

The children understood the Transdisciplinary Theme, identified a few issues relating to it and will  show their understanding through an illustration , poem or collage. They have also viewed the e book ‘ Grace for the President’ and reflected on it. This book is about a young girl contesting the presidential elections in a school in America and the issues that crop up. Their understanding if the Central Idea and the few key words of the Central Idea were also done.

First Week

What a week! A fun filled 3 days with children brushing up their understanding of PYP elements: attitudes , attributes and the concepts. Sharing of the exciting holiday events and lovely places was also a part of the daily routine. The children made new friends, set goals for themselves and identified their strengths and weaknesses. Looking forward to more academics next week.
